The Organizing Committee of S.-T. Yau High School Science Award (referred to as “OC”) has received calls concerning the academic integrity of the 2020 Grand Award and Chemistry Gold Award winner Feiyang Huang. Thus the OC arranged to review the paper and materials submitted by Feiyang Huang for the competitions and referred to people relevant to the issue.

Hereby, the OC would like to announce:

1 Feiyang Huang won both Gold Award in Chemistry and Grand Award in 2020. Paper title: “Facile Fabrication of Silicon Carbide Spheres and Its Application in Polymer Composites with Enhanced Thermal Conductivity”. Advisors: Professor Ching-Ping Wong and Dr. Yimin Yao.

2 For the Chemistry final competition, the jury including Zhanting Li, Heyong He, Lei Liu, Zhiyong Tang and Hongbin Li gave scores separately and ranked candidates according to their average scores. For the Science Gold Award, the jury including Zhengwei Liu, Xiaoming Sun, Stanislaw Janeczko , Wilfried Schmid, Hongru Ma, Wei Ku, Ping Ao, Zhanting Li, Lei Liu, Hongbin Li, Liang Cai, Qiang Yu, Junying Yuan, Hongbin Zha, Hongbo Fu, Ping He and Shunming Zhang voted anonymously on Huang’s performance. Comment from the Jury stated that Huang’s paper and his performance in the defense met the standard of Chemistry Gold Award and Grand Award.

3 One advisor, Professor Ching-Ping Wong certified that Huang worked under the guidance of Dr. Yimin Yao. They achieved some progress in research in related fields.

As Dr. Yimin Yao’s work was by then under the supervision of Professor Ching-Ping Wong, Wong offered the experimental suggestions to Huang.

4 The research results of Dr. Yimin Yao, Huang and 6 other collaborators were published at the 2020 21^st International Conference on Electronic Packaging Technology. Huang declared the situation according to the requirements of the S.-T. Yau High School Science Award when submitting the entry materials. Dr. Yimin Yao and 6 other collaborators stated in the evidentiary materials that Huang has completed the main work of the paper and is the co-first author of the paper, and they unanimously agreed that Huang could take the paper to attend the S.-T. Yau High School Science Award. In Huang’s paper, he listed helps received from his supervisor Yimin Yao & Ching-Ping Wong, as well as the part of the work done by other collaborators. His citation list is complete and clear.

In conclusion, Huang worked under the guidance of his advisors, finished the experiment and paper, and independently attended the defense. Strictly following S.-T. Yau High School Science Award regulations, each of the jury members evaluated his paper and performance independently. According to the joint decisions by the Jury, Feiyang Huang received Grand Award and Chemistry Gold Award. The OC then decided Huang’s paper met the academic integrity standard required by S.-T. Yau High School Science Award.
